Dinorwig Quarry

28 July 2025 - Eryri National Park, United Kingdom

Dinorwic quarry was a slate mine from 1787 to 1969; Now it has a set of paved walking paths at the for visitors to wonder around. This was a relatively easy walk (albeit a quite hilly). From the carpark we started by heading up to a viewpoint with wonderful views across Llyn Peris and Llyn Padarn.

From here we walked down to the ruins Barics Dre Newydd (Anglesey Barracks). Many workers traveled from Gwynedd and Anglesey to mine at the quarry. These workers usually returned home at the weekend, and these Barracks therefore were built to house them during the week.

There is now a footpath down the center of the street. On either side there is a row of 11 cottages.

There was lots of plats growing up the stonework.

Lots of people have scratched their names into the stones.

Dinorwic quarry has plenty of sheer faces, and throughout the day we saw several rock climbers. It is technically prohibited as there has been Rock Falls, however, keen climbers will always find a way.
